Manure Management

Course Description

Management of livestock manure to support agronomic fertility while protecting and enhancing natural resources is critical to the agricultural industry and communities. This training meets the regulatory requirements for certification of manure managers on permitted animal feeding operations in Nebraska while also supporting non-permitted livestock producers, crop farmers, and their advisors in making data-driven nutrient management decisions.

Topics include optimizing nitrogen and phosphorus management in agronomic systems, navigating nutrient management record-keeping, and implementing best management practices to protect water and air quality, among others. Practical, real-world examples are used to illustrate recommended best practices, define manure-focused regulatory requirements, and demonstrate practical decision-making tools that support efficient nutrient utilization and natural resources protection.

Whether you're implementing a nutrient management plan to optimize return on investment, seeking continuing education credits for yourself or your employees, or just want to improve your understanding of manure and nutrient management requirements and best practices, this course delivers the knowledge you need, plus a certificate and digital badge to prove it.

Learning Objectives

  1. Apply Nebraska manure management regulations and maintain accurate, compliant records to support permitting, reporting, and on-farm decisionmaking.
  2. Evaluate manure nutrient content and soil data to develop effective land application strategies that optimize crop nutrient utilization and minimize nutrient losses.
  3. Identify potential risks to water and air quality from manure utilization and implement management practices that reduce runoff, leaching, odors, and other environmental impacts.

Target Learner
