Traditional Ecological Knowledge Curriculum
Course Description
This introductory course is designed to spark interest in how environmental educators can more intentionally, respectfully, and thoughtfully incorporate Indigenous ways of knowing into environmental and outdoor learning. Through an online format, participants will build a foundational understanding of Traditional Ecological Knowledge and consider how these perspectives can inform more inclusive and placebased educational practice.
Learning Objectives
- Compare and contrast Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Indigenous ways of knowing, Western science, and Western ways of knowing in relation to environmental learning and problem solving.
- Identify opportunities and challenges in respectfully integrating TEK into teaching while honoring, acknowledging, and protecting Indigenous knowledge and communities.
- Design and teach lessons or units that support students’ relationships with the natural world and appropriately incorporate TEK-related principles, knowledge, or practices.
