Course Description
The WaspID Course is a virtual course aiming to provide an accessible, practical treatment of wasp biology and classification and unite a global audience in the study of Earth’s most exceptional animals.
Over the course of two weeks, the WaspID Course covers identification and taxonomy of every extant wasp family and superfamily and introduces students to related topics including wasp morphology, wasp taxonomy and systematics, and methods for collecting and rearing wasps.
The course is open to individuals of all backgrounds and is designed to accommodate any level of experience in entomology. The course is taught by a group of instructors from around the world, each of whom covers topics relating to their area of expertise; instructors include research scientists, authors, and other exemplary members of the scientific community.
Learning Objectives
- Understand major collection methods for wasps and the relevance of different methods for various wasp groups
- Implement primary methods for preservation and curation of wasp specimens following accepted standards
- Employ fundamental elements of zoological taxonomy, with an emphasis on components related to contemporary systematics of insects
- Associate important components of natural history with wasp taxonomy
- Apply morphological diagnostic characters to determine the superfamily and family of a wasp specimen
